Love at a Coffee Shop

7am

She smiles at his shaking blue veined hand and thinks
With the credibility of silver threaded hair
'Surely this man is the best who ever lived'
He spills the sugar and swears

Noon

The sun in her hair like a halo
And he can hardly keep his hands from the tendril that escaped to tickle her nose

3pm

Too big books in a threadbare pack
Forgotten

5:30pm

He earned that Large
And the moments silence
His mother in law's medicine tucked just under his chair

8:00pm

"Is... Is this a date?
My hands are sweating.
Why are my hands sweating?!?!!"

She has a smile like shortbread

9:30pm

Black coffees
"That movie was terrible"
He leans dejectedly against the wall
one arm resting on the table between them
"So predictable"
"The main character was horribly miscast"
"I couldn't agree more -- "

10:30pm

The barista sweeps the floor
Throws out the grounds
Turns out the lights
And goes home.
